There is a real conflict in the mind between the frontal lobe, which thinks carefully and considers long term results, and the amygdala, which pushes for quick, immediate satisfaction. When a person accepts Christ, old habit pathways in the brain still remain, but the brain can change. God gives strength to form new, healthier pathways. The will is the central power in human nature, and when we surrender it to God, we give Him permission to work in us and bring victory. This cooperation between God and the person is essential. Living by the Spirit brings peace, joy, and fulfillment, while living by the flesh leads to anxiety and bondage.
