Because the earth was filled with violence, God chose to cleanse it with a great flood. He instructed Noah to build a vast ark. For 120 years, Noah urged the people to turn from their ways and seek refuge. While animals came into the ark on their own, only Noah and his family entered—no one else heeded the warning. Seven days after the door was shut, rain began to fall, continuing for 40 days until the waters covered the entire land.
